PRESS RELEASE 26th May 2006

FANTASTIC NEWS!!

For those of you who haven’t heard the news we had a fantastic outcome from last nights’ Guildford Borough Council Executive Committee Meeting.

Thanks to all your work, letters or signatures in support of our campaign, we were finally able to convince the Council that they should keep the farm in public ownership and in farming. They also accepted our arguments that this would afford the best possible protection for such an important area of Green Belt in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Surrey Wildlife Trust and Laurence Matthews, a highly respected and successful local farmer, both put forward really exciting proposals to completely restore and renovate the farm and to keep it in farming. Council officers also said that several other local farmers had expressed interest in taking over the farm. GBC have therefore decided to advertise the Tyting Farm for lease, and to select the offer that best protects and enhances the local environment and guarantees the agricultural future of the farm.

Obviously, we will keep a careful eye on the progress of any lease negotiations and let you know what is happening. In the meantime, we cannot thank you all enough for your continued support and encouragement – we simply could not have achieved the success we have had without you.

P.S. If the Surrey Wildlife Trust proposals are successful, we have already indicated that we would be happy to assist them in raising funds to restore the buildings and pond. Stand by for further news or help them now by joining up at www.surreywildlifetrust.org.
